Regenerative Immunotherapies
Abstract
The proposed project, Regenerative Immunotherapies, is directly responsive to FY18 PRMRP Topic Area of Tissue Regeneration. The proposal presents "original ideas that foster new directions" in the field of regenerative medicine research. The overall goal of this proposal is to leverage the immune system to promote tissue repair after injury. The immune system is one of the first responders to tissue damage and sets the stage for subsequent repair processes such as stem cell mobilization, vascularization and extracellular matrix production. The immune system has experience in tissue repair as it inevitably damages tissue during response to infection. Targeting this early mechanism in both biomaterial and wound healing responses, we can change the paradigm in regeneration research and start to increase the clinical impact in functional repair. Furthermore, this approach may also facilitate the use and function of stem cells and other currently used tissue engineering strategies.
