The Influence of Social, Educational, and Work Experiences on Psychological Health for Transition-Aged Youth with Autism Spectrum Disorders

Abstract

The objective of this research was to identify specific day-to-day experiences that are associated with depressive symptoms and quality of life among adolescents and young adults with ASD. To accomplish this objective, we recruited 252 families of individuals with ASD between the ages of 15 and 25 from existing research and clinical registries. Using a multi-trait (i.e. multiple aspects of psychological health and daily experiences), multi-method (e.g., self- and parent-reports; surveys, diagnostic interviews, daily reports) design, we have commenced examining relationships between depressive symptoms, quality of life, and multiple types of experiences of these youth. Initial analyses suggested that it was not the amount of time in interactions that was associated with depressive symptoms rather how they felt during the interactions that was important. Knowledge gained from this project will lay the groundwork for clinical efforts to improve psychological health in adolescents and young adults with ASD.
