Opportunities and Risks of 5G Military Use in Europe
Abstract
This report focuses on U.S. military uses of the fifth-generation (5G) technology standard for cellular communications in a notional 2030 time frame, concentrating on a future smart logistics mission in the Baltics and surrounding countries. The report describes research conducted between April 2021 and February 2022 for the RAND Corporations National Defense Research Institute on Operational Risks and Opportunities of European 5G Use, sponsored by the Operate Through Program Lead of the 5G-to-NextG Initiative at the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering. It is intended for policy-minded readers and decisionmakers and should be of interest to Joint decisionmakers with responsibilities for communications, emerging technologies, and logistics.
