Human Head Impact Dose Concussion Risk Functions and Sensor-Based Military-Specific Environmental Monitoring System

Abstract

Lack of accurate and precise head impact monitoring is the fundamental gap in understanding acute and long-term concussive and sub-concussive head impact effects. We are bridging this gap using an impact monitoring mouthguard system proven to be accurate and precise in single impacts. This project leveraged the impact monitoring mouthguard (IMM), an accurate and precise head impact measurement instrument, achieving Level 3 validity per National Football League (NFL) testing protocols by producing head impact dose data within 5 percent of truth. The Study Team quantified head impact severity, video observations of concussive signs, and clinical behavioral assessments in a large-scale observational study of over 1,000 service members and athletes. Concussion injury risk thresholds and a TRL9 IMM system tailored to monitor real-time head impact injury risk in military and civilian populations were the results of this work.
