XPlan: Domain Agnostic Experimental Planning
Abstract
SIFT and its subcontractor Raytheon/BBN addressed experimental planning and data representation under TA2 of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Synergistic Discovery and Design (SD2) program. Our team played a role in designing SD2 systems architectures, developing experimental planning and knowledge representation formats and tools, integrating multiple software components within our team and across the program, and providing leadership for challenge problems and working groups. We created several metadata curation, experimental planning, and data analysis tools that facilitate increased automation and traceability of experimental metadata. In collaboration with other SD2 performers, we integrated these tools into a highly automated pipeline called the Round Trip (RT), which lowers the barrier for an experimentalist to quickly submit large experiments to a robotic cloud laboratory and automatically retrieve processed data. The Round Trip became the Test-Learn sub-loop for several Design-Build-Test-Learn loops inside SD2 challenge problems (Yeast States and Novel Chassis) and outside transition partners (AFRL and ARL).
