Real-Time Analysis and Model Comparison during Flight Test

Abstract

The common mantra for flight test execution is Safe, Secure, Effective, Efficient. The development and incorporation of real-time analysismethods in control rooms have the potential to improve the safety of flight test execution while providing large increases in the effectivenessand efficiency of missions. Leveraging the successes of several recent test programs, USAF Test Pilot School has developed and incorporatedreal-time analysis methods to include data detection and model comparison. This paper highlights the use of real-time model comparison andthe impact to safety of flight test by identifying deviations from model predictions. Additionally, the paper goes into the process of using datadetection methods to efficiently identify segments of data to process and analyze. With these tools, an engineer can leave a flight test missioncontrol room with a set of initially processed data to inform the team on the effectiveness of a mission. While there are a large range ofapplications, this paper focuses on a recent application of performance model comparison of an aircraft. A program at USAF Test Pilot Schoolproved that a novel real-time analysis tool was able to accurately detect performance maneuvers in real-time and analyze the results. Inaddition, the tool was able to make detections more accurately than a human observer and identify useable segments of data during nondedicatedmaneuvering. This real-time analysis tool has the potential for numerous benefits to flight test safety, effectiveness, and efficiency.
