X-62 VISTA Capabilities and Architecture

Abstract

The X-62 VISTA has undergone a major transformation from its previous configuration as the NF-16D VISTA. The X-62s capabilities are described to include the upgraded VISTA Simulation System, the System for Autonomous Control of the Simulation, multiple cockpit additions, DAS, CMDL, and TTNT datalinks, and the ability to now carry external stores. The X-62 has been configured to meet new curriculum requirements and USAF autonomy testing needs while maintaining its flexibility to support a wide range of risk reduction test programs. A brief history of the aircraft is presented followed by rationale for the new VISTA systems and an overall architecture with a description of its capabilities. This paper serves as an introductory session for a series of papers that provide a detailed view of the design, implementation, and flight test of the X-62 VISTA at the USAF Test Pilot School.
