Network Logistics Games: Design and Implementation

Abstract

In wargames, the logistics necessary to support fielded forces are frequently abstracted or ignored altogether because of their complexity and the need to ensure the manageability of game rule sets. Abstracting logistics is paradoxical given the importance of resupplying units when waging and winning wars in the real world, and studying them through optimization omits the complicated dynamics of human decision making in crises something that wargames are well suited to explore. To address the dearth of logistics-focused wargames, this report details a logistics game design that reflects the complexity of logistics systems without requiring computer aids. The report is intended to guide both experienced and inexperienced wargame designers in creating a game of this type to answer their own research questions.
