Penetration of Thin Hot Rolled Steel by 37 MM Model Projectile

Abstract

For the purpose of obtaining improved estimates of velocity losses of 3" AP Mk 29 Mod 1 or 2, 3" AP Mk 79, and 4" HC Mk 15 Mod 1 projectiles in thin plate penetration and in order to develop further the pendulum method of measuring momentum loss, a number of momentum loss trials have been made with 37 mm test projectiles. The results are in general agreement with full scale results. The exitance of a minimum momentum loss mentioned in a previous NRL report is given additional experimental support. This feature is discussed in terms of a simplified theory for momentum loss at low relative plate thicknesses. It is shown that with proper screening and collecting provisions for plate fragments the pendulum momentum loss method my be operated at a precision of about two percent.
