The TO and E Hospital as a Baylor Residency Site

Abstract

The purpose of this graduate management project was to determine if the TO and E hospital is an appropriate residency site for Baylor Health Care Administrative residents. Using the six residency objectives and the eight Joint Medical Executive Competency groupings as a template for an appropriate residency site, the author used examples from the residency year to demonstrate that the TO and E hospital is an appropriate residency site. The Bosnia deployment served as an added benefit to the residency year. Like other residency sites, the TO and E hospital has its strengths and weaknesses. Who and what type of student is best suited for the TO and E hospital residency is dependent upon the individual interests and learning needs of the student, and is not limited to students of certain rank or background. A challenge for the TO and E residency site is the consistent availability of qualified preceptors. The author concludes that the TO and E hospital is a valuable asset to the Baylor Health Care Administration program and should remain as a residency site because it broadens the available learning opportunities for students and produces an officer with a better understanding of the full spectrum of military medicine, from combat health support to fixed facility health care and hospitalization.
