Scoring Underwater Demonstrations for Detection and Classification of Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) (Presentation)

Abstract

SERDP/ESTCP is sponsoring the development of novel systems for the detection and classification of Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) in underwater environments. SERDP is also sponsoring underwater testbeds to demonstrate the performance of these novel systems. Scoring these demonstrations is a complicated process. The Institute for Defense Analyses (IDA) designed and implemented the scoring process for ESTCPs previous terrestrial demonstrations from 2007 2017. In some cases, the lessons learned from the terrestrial demonstrations can be leveraged in the underwater demonstrations. In other cases, new solutions must be found, due to the added logistical, engineering, and safety challenges of the underwater environment. This presentation will provide an overview of the main considerations for scoring underwater demonstrations for UXO detection and classification.
