Validation Research for the FA48 Officer Selection Process
Abstract
The FA48 role requires a unique and highly specialized set of skills and attributes for success, as the job environment can be challenging, ill-defined, and ambiguous. FA48 officers are frequently assigned to positions outside of the United States and are required to interact with foreign officials and representatives from various countries, as well as personnel from agencies outside of the DoD. As FA48s are representing the U.S. Army in a foreign environment with minimal supervision or guidance, it is imperative that these officers possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) needed to be successful in this role. However, there is currently no standardized selection or assessment tool to identify officers for these roles. This report describes the predictive ability of a series of cognitive and noncognitive measures of FA48 KSAs as part of an ongoing effort by the U. S. Army Research Institute for the Behavioral and Social Sciences to develop and validate a selection tool for FA48 applicants. Results of a concurrent validation effort revealed that several individual difference measures showed promise for predicting FA48 performance. Additional data collection is needed to determine the best combination of measures for inclusion in a selection tool for FA48s.
