A Study of the Material Management Education and Training Program for Medical Supply Officers Serving in the United States Army Medical Department
Abstract
The problem discussed in this study is that of developing specific recommendations that would improve the material management education and training program for medical supply officers serving in the United States Army Medical Department. The study analyzed and evaluated the career management pattern for medical supply officers serving in the Army Medical Department, as well as their educational and training opportunities. Current military and civilian writings were reviewed on the general subjects of management, logistics management, material management, education and training. Management of the medical material system has become a highly complex and sophisticated activity. At the present time only twenty-four percent of the Army's career medical material managers are formally educated in graduate level management techniques and skills. These officers received their education through attendance at advanced service schools or graduate programs conducted at civilian institutions. The study concluded that the present material management education and training program of the Army Medical Department provides too few of its medical supply officers with graduate level management education and recommended the establishment of a graduate level medical material management course at the United States Army Medical Field Service School.
