Determination of Waiting Room Space: U.S. Army Hospital, Fort Campbell, Kentucky

Abstract

The problem was to develop a model for determining the number of clinic waiting spaces needed in the proposed new hospital facility for U.S. Army Hospital, Fort Campbell, Kentucky. A one-week survey was made of the number of people waiting in thirteen clinic waiting areas at the U.S. Army Hospital, Fort Campbell. The data were then correlated with data concerning the number of patients seen. The purpose of the correlation was to determine the feasibility of using the projected clinic work load as a predictor of the number of waiting spaces needed. The conclusion of the study was that the number of patients seen in a clinic is a valid and reliable predictor of the number of waiting spaces needed. The recommendations of the study were: (1) the number of waiting spaces allocated by the OTSG Utilization and Requirement Study for the new facility for the U.S. Army Hospital, Fort Campbell, Kentucky, be re-evaluated utilizing the model developed by the study; and (2) the method for determining waiting space requirements as described in the study be utilized by facility planners when designing waiting rooms for outpatient clinics.
