A Study of Organizational Models for the St. Joseph Mid-Houston Community Mental Health Center

Abstract

The problem was to determine the most satisfactory organizational relationship between the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word and the St. Joseph Mid-Houston Community Mental Health Center. Data for this paper was obtained from personal observation of the operation at St. Joseph Hospital and the St. Joseph Mid-Houston Community Mental Health Center, conducting unstructured interviews of members of the staffs of the two institutions, a review of the literature, and an analysis of hospital records. The major conclusion was that the most satisfactory organizational model for the St. Joseph Mid-Houston Community Health Center would be a subsidiary corporation of the Mother House Corporation. The major recommendation was that the St. Joseph Mid-Houston Community Mental Health Center be organized as a Texas non-profit subsidiary corporation of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word. A second recommendation was that further consideration be given to organizing the mental health center as a completely independent Texas non-profit corporation when and if the subsidiary corporation becomes a financially self-sustaining entity.
