A Time-Cost Analysis of the Blood Collecting and Result-Reporting System at Baylor University Medical Center, Dallas, Texas
Abstract
The problem was to determine the best method of performing maintenance on medical equipment at San Antonio State Hospital, San Antonio, Texas. The methods of research included: (1) an observation of the hospitals present medical maintenance system, including user appraisal of the system; (2) a cost analysis of the present system; (3) a determination of the local wage level for medical equipment repairmen in the San Antonio area; and (4) a determination of contract maintenance service available in the local community. The major findings of the study were: (1) the present system was adequate, but users of medical equipment were far from being completely satisfied; (2) the historical average cost of the present system was $235.09 per month or $2,821 per year; (3) in-house maintenance service with a medical equipment repairman employed by the hospital was not feasible since the local wage level for this type employee was $7,570 and the probable starting salary at the hospital would have been $5,808; (4) contract service was offered by only one firm, and the cost of this service for a comprehensive maintenance contract was excessive. It was concluded that the present system combined with contract preventive maintenance offered the best system at the lowest cost for comprehensive maintenance service. Recommendations were to continue with the present system with certain minor modifications and to attempt to obtain contract preventive maintenance service.
