A Study to Determine the Effectiveness of the Texas Hospital Association Shared Management Systems Housekeeping Study Guide in Participating Hospitals

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of the Texas Hospital Association Shared Management Systems Housekeeping Study Guide in participating hospitals. A review of the literature revealed that while the basic management engineering techniques contained in the study guide were utilized in several states, the study guide concept itself was unique in Texas. Two questionnaires were sent to all participating hospitals and three hospitals were personally visited for personal interviews. The study analyzed the extent to which the study guide was being utilized, the change in employee habits, dollar savings, and other reported intangible benefits. It was concluded that the study guide concept was very useful where industrial engineering expertise was not available on a hospital staff. Some hospitals had extended results gained from this study into other management areas. Benefits derived from the study guide concept included reduction in operating expenditures, increased employee morale, better distribution of workload, and improved supervision and training.
