Portfolio Review of DoD's Work Experience Programs: Developing a STEM Workforce: Summary Report
Abstract
The DoD conducts many programs that provide students or early-career science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) professionals with an opportunity to gain relevant work skills. These programs include internships, apprenticeships, or related experiences such as work-based learning, cooperative education, and postdoctoral positions, which collectively can be categorized as Work Experience Programs (WEPs). WEPs have two defining characteristics: (1) an experiential component where participants engage in meaningful work and (2) an educational component where they acquire skills or knowledge. This report, the first of two phases about WEPs in the DoD, provides a description of 54 programs with various program goals, participants, program structures, activities, and it describes program benefits to both the participants and the organizations that run the programs. This report includes analyses of the DoD WEP portfolio, including the variations and similarities across programs and provides recommendations for more detailed assessments for a second-phase evaluation.
