Rural Health Care in Thailand

Abstract

This study revealed that there is a lack of physicians, paramedical personnel, and hospitals in the rural areas of Thailand. In addition, the health centers, dispensaries, and clinics in these areas are insufficient in number, are inadequately staffed, and are often inaccessible to a large portion of the population. Currently, practicing physicians are not completely familiar with the health problems peculiar to the rural areas, nor are they motivated to enter these areas. The main recommendation is to train an adequate number of physicians for the rural areas of Thailand in order to provide for better health of the people, a lower mortality rate, a greater respect for health care, and an increase in the nations supply of doctors. In order to achieve such desired objectives, more medical schools and teaching hospitals are required. A long-term program to help train various types of health service personnel should be considered. Increasing the number of health centers and mobile health units is recommended to reach remote or transitory people. It is the writers conviction that a considerable improvement in the rural health services can be achieved if the recommendations contained in this study are adopted.
