In Situ Remediation of Aqueous Film Forming Foams and Common Co-Contaminants with the Dual Approach of Chemical Oxidation and Bioremediation

Abstract

This project responded to SON number ERSON-17-01 to develop a greater understanding of synergistic treatment technologies for the remediation of PFAS and co-contaminants, with the effort to improve remediation strategies that minimize cost and maximize efficiency. The overall scope was to develop effective in situ remediation strategies for treating PFAS from AFFF, along with trichloroethene (TCE), and 1,4-dioxane (dioxane), by combining chemical oxidation with bioremediation. Our scope was focused on persulfate oxidation and its effects on biological remediation processes, the biodegradation of TCE and dioxane and PFAS impacts on these processes and integrating persulfate oxidation with biostimulation and/or bioaugmentation for complete removal of these co-contaminants. We began this project with the following hypotheses to develop and improve the performance of remedial strategies for in situ PFAS treatment: 1. In situ remediation of AFFFs with co-contaminants can be achieved by sequentially applying persulfate ISCO and bioremediation. 2. The initial treatment of PFAS and co-contaminants with persulfate ISCO will remove chemical inhibitors of aquifer microorganisms so that subsequent downstream microbial activity for in situ degradation of mixed contaminants can be stimulated. 3. Bioremediation of organics in AFFF and co-contaminants prior to ISCO will decrease the amount of oxidant needed for subsequent PFAS destruction.
