Properties of Quenched and Tempered HTS Plate

Abstract

Steels of the Hi-Tensile grade of Specification 4855 are used for ship construction in the as-rolled condition and as such possess relatively low resistance to impact at low temperatures (high transition temperature). In an effort to improve their tensile and notch toughness characteristics steels of this analysis were quenched and tempered and the results of tensile and notched bar tests show that yield strengths of 70,000 p.s.i. are obtainable in most of the steels at tempering temperatures in the vicinity of 1000 deg F and that the transition temperature is lowered about 70 deg C (158 deg F) at this yield strength level.
