A Study to Determine the Most Effective System of Materials Distribution for Methodist Hospital, Lubbock, Texas

Abstract

The problem addressed with this thesis was to determine the most effective system for materials distribution at Methodist Hospital, Lubbock, Texas. The research methodology included: (1) a review of related literature; (2) observation of current distribution systems in effect at Methodist Hospital; (3) unstructured interviews which were conducted with administrators, managers, central supply technicians, and nurses; (4) observation of administrative procedures and forms used in the procedures; (5) interviews which were conducted with individuals knowledgeable in materials management; (6) data on the volume and flow of supplies and materials from central supply to the users were compiled through a review of requisitions; and (7) observation of the distribution system currently in operation at the Audie Murphy Veterans Administration Hospital, San Antonio, Texas was made. The conclusion based on the research suggests that the best method for material distribution at Methodist Hospital, Lubbock, Texas, is the manual cart-exchange system combined with semi-automatic pneumatic tube and dumbwaiter systems.
