A Study to Determine the Best Sources of Funding for a Family Practice Residency Program at Lutheran General Hospital, San Antonio, Texas

Abstract

This study was designed to determine the best sources of funding for a family practice residency program at Lutheran General Hospital, San Antonio, Texas. A review of current medical literature and numerous personal interviews were conducted in the problem area. The advantages and the disadvantages of various sources of funding the program were compared and evaluated. The study determined that a multisource combination of federal government grants and national private foundation grants should be used to finance the family practice residency program. It was also concluded that the family practice residency program should be operated as a fee-for-service procedure. Recommendations were made as follows: (1) to apply for funds from specific federal government offices and from national foundations; and (2) to formulate a cost and revenue-sharing plan between the hospital and the medical staff before the family practice residency program is activated.
