A Study to Develop a Comprehensive Emergency Medical Services System for Fort Benning, Georgia
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to develop a comprehensive and coordinated emergency medical services (EMS) system for the Fort Benning, Georgia community. Research investigation consisted of analyzing the installation and the medical resources available through the unstructured interview. Review of the literature was conducted in order to obtain a basis for determining the basic elements of an EMS system and how these elements should be combined into a cohesive whole to form the system. An analysis of workload data was not possible due to the absence of a data base. In view of the facts presented, it was determined that three resources should be joined together to form a comprehensive EMS system: Martin Army Hospital, the 498th Medical Company, and the Fort Benning Fire Department. Further, the installation EMS system should be hospital based. It was recommended that: all ambulances be upgraded to meet the Department of Transportation ambulance design criteria, all EMS personnel be trained and certified as emergency medical technicians, all resources be under the direction of a central EMS dispatcher, and all EMS resources be under the overall control and supervision of the Chief Emergency Treatment Service, Martin Army Hospital.
