Truth and Reality, Lost in Translation: Russia and the Ethical Implications of Emerging Technologies in the Information Environment
Abstract
Revolutionary changes in the information environment, characterized by global, highspeed connections, abundant, easily accessible information, and emerging technology that can produce and manipulate data, have altered the way humans learn about their world and share their lives in community. This paper argues that emerging technology in the information environment makes it more difficult for people to distinguish truth and make sense of their world. At the same time, philosophical trends that dismiss objective truth and prioritize subjective experience and emotion amplify the disorientation and make ethical action in the world increasingly difficult. This paper explores how information and communication affect human thinking and shared communities in the context of radical changes in the information environment. It then explores the philosophical trends animating contemporary culture before using Russia as a case study to demonstrate the ethical implications inherent in the emerging information space and philosophical milieu.
