A study of the housekeeping services at the United States Army Hospital Specialized Treatment Center, Fort Gordon, Georgia

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the best method of providing housekeeping service to the United States Army Hospital Specialized Treatment Center, Fort Gordon, Georgia. Interviews were conducted with member of the hospital staff, civilian hospital executive housekeepers, housekeeping personnel and the housekeeping contract supervisor. The job performance of housekeeping personnel was observed. A time study was conducted to determine the amount of time nursing service personnel devoted to housekeeping duties. Data for the study was collected from current literature in the housekeeping and health care fields. The conclusion was that the establishment of an inhouse housekeeping branch was the best method for providing housekeeping service to the United States Army Hospital Specialized Treatment Center. It was recommended that a qualified executive housekeeper be hired to head the housekeeping branch, a manpower survey be conducted to determine staffing requirements, an inventory be performed to determine supply and equipment requirements, and a continuous housekeeping training program be developed and initiated.
