A Study of the Admitting Office at Baylor University Medical Center

Abstract

The purpose of the study was to determine the most efficient system for admitting patients to Baylor University Medical Center, Dallas, Texas. Techniques employed in the study included: Interviews with personnel in the Admitting Office and other departments of Baylor University Medical Center; Interviews with managers of admitting departments of selected hospitals; Statistical analysis of the Admitting Office workload; and a review of admitting procedures discussed in the current literature. The study revealed that a pre-admission system should be the most efficient system for controlling patient admissions into Baylor University Medical Center, but that a low pre-admission rate was reducing the effectiveness of the present system. Although benefits expected from this system should include improved public relations, improved bed control, greater flexibility in scheduling workload, reduced admission time and more accurate collection of admitting information, difficulty was experienced because of excessive admission time and excessive errors in admission information. Recommendations were made concerning procedures to increase the percentage of patients pre-admitted and improve the operation of the Admitting Office.
