A Study of Solid Waste Disposal, Research Hospital and Medical Center, Kansas City, Missouri

Abstract

This study examines a waste disposal problem faced by one hospital in order to determine the best method of solid waste disposal. To carry out the study it was necessary to examine the existing system and to determine the types, quantities and weights of waste generated daily. Also examined was the effect installation of a new system might have in relation to the present plant. Literature was reviewed to gain a working knowledge of solid waste disposal systems in use by hospitals. Correspondence was carried out with numerous manufacturers of waste disposal equipment to obtain specific data, including cost estimates. It was concluded that the combination of a pulping unit and a crusher-destroyer would be the best solution to the hospitals problem. It was recommended that the hospital take the necessary action to install the equipment and that further studies be carried out to examine the collecting, transporting, sorting, and scheduling procedures with a view to increase automation.
