Why the U.S. Shouldn't Try and Compete Economically with China for Influence in Pakistan
Abstract
Most scholarly and journalistic articles looking at the U.S.-Pakistan relationship focus their attention on how the U.S. should compete with China for continued influence over Pakistan, essentially skipping the question of if it should compete, at least economically, with the PRC. This paper contends it is time for the U.S. to largely disengage with Pakistan and expend its finite economic, military, and political capital elsewhere. It should refuse to turn the spigot back on unless Pakistan's elite undertake serious economic, governance, and policy reforms. Even in this scenario, it should not attempt to compete directly with the PRC dollar for dollar in a competition for influence.
