The Pacific War: An Evaluation of Alternative Strategic Courses of Action

Abstract

When evaluating the alternative strategic courses of action open to the United States for terminating the Pacific War, the better alternative than the use of atomic bomb was to employ the cumulative efforts in use with the atomic bomb serving as deterrence. Through an analysis of the strategic courses of action, each option presented itself with massive casualties and risk. A blockade, aerial bombardments, the threat of invasion, the Soviet entry into the war, and a failing economy all could have been used strategically to change the course of the war.
