International Jiu Jitsu: Expanding Military Relations with the Peoples Republic of China

Abstract

Tensions between the United States and the Peoples Republic of China continue to rise. U.S. and PRC militaries both operate in the Asia-Pacific region. The INDO-PACOM Commander must expand military relations with the PRC in order to prevent unintended crises from occurring. Military-to-military relations are not appeasement on behalf of the United States. The U.S. benefits more from military ties then the PRC as this paper will demonstrate. Expanding military-to-military relations will reduce the risk of unintended conflicts or accidents between the U.S. and PRC, will build operational trust and cooperation between the Chinese and American militaries and will promote stability in the Asia-Pacific region.
