Leveraging Commercial Space Services: Opportunities and Risks for the Department of the Air Force (Research Summary)

Abstract

The expanding commercial space industry offers services that could help the Department of Defense (DoD) meet its mission requirements more efficiently. These services range from commercial satellite communications (COMSATCOM) and remote sensing to collecting weather data; positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT); and space domain awareness. To better position itself to take advantage of these services, the Department of the Air Force (DAF) asked RAND Project AIR FORCE to help identify opportunities, risks, and challenges that the DAF might encounter when leveraging commercial space services in select mission and capability areas.
