United States Marine Corps Force 2030: Recruiting for Enlisted Lateral Entry

Abstract

In accordance with the Marine Corps' 38th Commandant's desire for a more mature force and lateral entry options laid out in "Force Design 2030," this is a mixed-methods study using both qualitative "quasi-statistics" and inferential statistics to explore the motivational drivers of civilians to enlist in the United States Marine Corps at the age of 21 or greater, when research indicates maturity and cognitive development is mostly complete. It also explores factors that may or may not be related to the retention of the same "non-traditional-aged" Marines. A comprehensive review of historical and current lateral entry programs within the Department of Defense and recommendations on how the Marine Corps could proceed in developing a modern lateral entry program is explored.
