A Study of Linen Distribution Methods at Veterans Administration Hospital, Kerrville, Texas

Abstract

This study was conducted to determine the most effective method of linen distribution for the Veterans Administration Hospital at Kerrville, Texas. Attention was directed primarily to the problems associated with the distribution of linen to the hospital wards. Emphasis was placed on the need to provide effective, yet efficient, linen service to the hospital. The requisition method of linen distribution employed by the hospital was described and analyzed. The infection hazards presented by contaminated linen were considered. Inadequate linen stocks and excessive ward linen quotas were identified as problems contributing to the ineffectiveness of the hospitals linen operations. The advantages and deficiencies of six alternative methods of linen distribution were evaluated. The automatic resupply method of distribution was selected as being best suited to the requirements of this particular hospital. This method offered both effective linen distribution and reduced operating costs.
