Talk Like a Leader: Communication Skills Training for Noncommissioned Officers
Abstract
Counseling in the Army is essential for developing capable, resilient, and satisfied Soldiers who are prepared for current and future responsibilities (U.S. Department of the Army, 2014). However, previous research suggests the number of opportunities noncommissioned officers (NCOs) have to enhance relevant skills in this area is quite limited. The U.S. Army Research Institute for the Behavioral and Social Sciences (ARI) developed a new skills-based training curriculum called Talk Like a Leader (TLaL) to address this issue. A formative evaluation was conducted to ensure TLaL training is beneficial and improves communication skills for participants as intended. The results of the formative evaluation illustrate that the TLaL training was well-received by NCOs who, on average, rated the training as highly effective and worth their time. There was also evidence that the TLaL training had the intended impact on the communication skills of NCOs.
