Operational Evaluation of RDC Technology Capabilities Demonstrated During CWID 2007
Abstract
Three innovative and promising communication/information systems were evaluated as part of the Coalition Warrior Interoperability Demonstration (CWID) event for 2007. Specifically evaluated were technologies being developed in separate programs by the U.S. Coast Guard Research and Development Center, Groton: (1) a Boarding Team Communications System, (2) a Maritime Biometric Identification System, and (3) a Maritime Domain Awareness Data Sharing Community of Interest (MDA-DS-COI) System. These three systems were demonstrated to show an ability to exchange a variety of data/information including voice, biometric data (fingerprints), and video. Exercise scenarios were designed to bring these three technologies together at Project SeaHawk in Charleston, SC, to perform operational utility assessments in a realistic field setting. The results showed that the Boarding Team Communications System and the Maritime Biometric Identification System are both at an advanced stage of development, and should be given serious consideration for USCG implementation. The Domain Awareness/Data Sharing Community of Interest system had limited success and should undergo additional development and evaluation.
