A Study to Develop Recommendations for Improving the Social Service at Earl K. Long Memorial Hospital, Baton Rouge, Louisiana

Abstract

This study was conducted at Earl K. Long Memorial Hospital, Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Its purpose was to develop recommendations for improving the social service offered by the hospital with particular emphasis on achieving a more timely certification of eligibility for patients who needed Department of Public Welfare assistance. Primary research tools were the unstructured interview, a questionnaire, the review of existing records, and a review of selected, pertinent literature. The study centered around the policies and procedures of four basic components of the hospital which had, or could have had, a direct bearing on the study problem. These were the Social Service Department, Volunteer Services Department, Medical Records Department, and professional staff. A major finding of the study was that the capabilities of the Social Service Department had to be increased as a prerequisite to any improvements which might be suggested. To achieve this end, a program for volunteers in social service was recommended. Other conclusions and recommendations of the study involved policies, procedures, or both, in each of the four areas examined.
