Government Capitulation of Tyrants and the Citizenry Response

Abstract

J. K. Rowling based her famous young adult series, Harry Potter, on the real-world events of the Holocaust and World War 2. This paper looks specifically at the rise of the tyrants in these two events and the various responses to that rise. Specifically, the French governmental capitulation of Hitler and the citizenry's response to this capitulation by developing resistance groups and its mirror image in the Ministry of Magics capitulation to Voldemort and the subsequent creation of the Order of the Phoenix and Dumbledore's Army. Looking at these two parallel stories under the lens of Just War Theory can assist in answering questions about what governments should have done and whether the actions of and responses to resistance groups were just.
