A Shifting Eurasian Strategic Balance: The Rise of Turkey

Abstract

Geopolitical and economic upheaval is shifting the balance of power on the Eurasian continent. Turkey's increasing assertiveness in the international system has resulted in its emergence as a growing regional hegemon that may complement or displace the influence of Russia, China, Iran, and the United States. The United States must consider Turkey's rise and be aware of the strategic risks and opportunities. A powerful and influential Turkey is inevitable, but competition with the United States is not. Through focused diplomacy and mutual respect, the United States can seize opportunities and mitigate risks associated with Ankara's ascendance
