Strategic Weapons, Redefined: Capitalizing on the Strategic Effects of Intermediate Force Capabilities

Abstract

Strategic deterrence reliant upon nuclear weapons has been a keystone of U.S. national security since the end of World War II. This essay makes the case that, amidst modern great power rivalry and gray zone competition, U.S. strategic interests require wider and more prominent incorporation of non-lethal weapons and intermediate force capabilities in order to deter armed conflict and preserve our position as the preeminent global superpower.
