Test Report for Enclosure/Static Mixer Testing for Future Investigation/Exploitation of Phosgene Munitions
Abstract
Chemical Biological Application and Risk Reduction (CBARR; U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Chemical Biological Center; Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD) programs require investigation, assessment, and recovery operations of phosgene (CG) munitions ranging in size from 250 lb. light case bombs to 1000 lb. CG bombs. The operations are conducted under engineering controls (environmental enclosures interfaced to multiple filter units) to eliminate or minimize the release of CG into the atmosphere. There is significant concern that release of high concentrations of CG into an environmental enclosure and then adsorbed onto carbon beds could cause filter units to catch on fire. A CBARR team investigated options to reduce CG concentrations introduced to carbon filters.
