Leveraging Grit in Military Research: A Comprehensive Review

Abstract

In recent years, the construct of grit has been of increased interest to the military. However, much of the grit construct remains unclear and research often presents conflicting findings. In this review, grit and its dimensionality will be explained. Additionally, research findings in the context of the military, academic, and general working populations will be presented. In general, literature has shown that although grit may present some value in the prediction of key outcomes (e.g., retention), the initial estimates of its potential impact were overestimated. More research is needed, particularly longitudinal validation studies, to better clarify if and when grit adds incremental validity in the prediction of key military outcomes.
