Isocyanate-Free and Low-VOC Polysiloxane Topcoats for Aircraft and Support Equipment

Abstract

Polyurethane topcoats for aircraft and support equipment are qualified to MIL-PRF-85285 performance requirements. However, these topcoats contain hazardous isocyanate-functional molecules that result in health issues for individuals who are exposed during paint operations. NRL-developed polysiloxane topcoats, which are free of isocyanates and lower in volatile organic solvents (VOCs) than polyurethanes, demonstrated they can provide equivalent, and in some instances improved, laboratory and field performance.
