Determination of Oxygen in Titanium
Abstract
Modified vacuum fusion techniques have been employed for the determination of oxygen in titanium. The sample to be analyzed is reacted with powered graphite, in the presence of tin, to form the stable carbide of titanium and reduce the oxides. The evolved gases are extracted and analyzed. With a furnace temperature of 1900 deg C, complete reduction is effected within 30 minutes. Good blank conditions are achieved. The analysis of synthetic standards, prepared by diffusing oxygen gas into hot titanium metal, indicates practically complete recovery of oxygen. Analyses have been made on titanium samples which have been prepared by various commercial processes. The vacuum apparatus is illustrated and described, and details for the preparation of standard reference samples are given.
