China's Operational Approach to Information Advantage: Crisis in the Taiwan Strait
Abstract
China's relationship with Taiwan is one of the most contentious 21st Century threats for the United States in the Indo-Pacific. Over the past thirty years, China has invested heavily in its ability to project power in the Indo-Pacific, with a keen focus on countering US capabilities. This study seeks to discover How will China use the informational dimension to achieve reunification with Taiwan in the 21st Century. Using China's approach to information advantage during two separate crises in the Taiwan Strait, this study aims to determine how China operationalizes information during a conflict with Taiwan. The study analyzes the 1955 and 1996 Taiwan Strait Crises using the PRC Reunification Strategy to analyze when China is likely to use information as the main effort toward reunification, and the 3Is theoretical framework to characterize how the PRC shapes its approach toward reunification with Taiwan while also specifying its use of information during a crisis in the Taiwan Strait. With the results of this study, modern military practitioners can project plausible Chinese approaches to information operations in a future conflict with Taiwan.
