Improving Handoffs from the Operating Room to the Post Anesthesia Care Unit

Abstract

The Joint Commission listed communication failure as the number one cause of anesthesia related sentinel events. At Fort Belvoir Community Hospital, there was concern for potential medication errors due to inconsistent methods of patient handoff communication between anesthesia staff and PACU nursing staff.
