Provider and Staff Focused Interventions to Optimize Patient Portal Use in Adult Primary Care
Abstract
Increasing demands and requirements continue to add to health care providers' workload, competing for their limited time and resources. These pressures have caused clinicians, administrators, and policy makers to search for solutions to save time, money, and resources while still focusing on improving patient outcomes. One proposed solution is implementation and optimal use of electronic patient portals (EPP) (Graham et al., 2020; Sorondo et al., 2016). Portals offer numerous functions for both providers and patients. Electronic patient portals vary in functionality but are required to provide patients access to portions of their electronic medical record and a means for secure communication with their healthcare provider (Turner et al., 2019). Other features may include appointment scheduling, medication refill requests, the ability to review encounter notes, lab results, and radiology reports (Lyles et al., 2020). Some facilities have even partnered with their information technology departments to include patient education libraries within the patient portal (Volk and Obeid, 2019). These portal functions provide numerous benefits which improve healthcare delivery.
