Enhancing the Duration of Postoperative Analgesia with Perineural Dexmedetomidine

Abstract

Single-shot interscalene brachial plexus blocks (ISB), using ropivacaine 0.5%and 4 mg of dexamethasone, are routinely administered to patients undergoing arthroscopic shoulder surgery to manage surgical pain. However, perineural dexamethasone provides an insufficient duration of analgesia. Therefore, the anesthesia providers at KACC are searching for an evidence-based perineural adjunct that provides adequate pain control for at least twenty-four hours without a significant cost burden for patients undergoing arthroscopic shoulder surgery.
