Implementation of a Same-Day Contraception Clinic in Primary Care at William Beaumont Army Medical Center

Abstract

The annual unintended pregnancy rate for all Active-Duty Servicewomen (ADSW) is 1.5% higher than the U.S. civilian population (6% vs 4.5%). Unintended pregnancies (UIP) in ADSW have far-reaching consequences in both garrison and deployed settings, negatively impacting operational readiness and force deploy ability. Evidence shows that same day access to contraception services reduces unintended pregnancies. In 2022, only 28 of the 721Military Treatment Facilities (MTFs) in the Military Health System (MHS) offered Walk-in Contraception Services (WiCS) clinics.
