Providers Empowering Patients: An Exploration of Agency and Shared Decision Making in the Context of Health Professions Education

Abstract

Shared decision making has been cited as the key to patient-centered care, but there is limited evidence of widespread implementation. Gaps in training and education have been cited as barriers, but there is no consensus about the most effective approach. Educational research around shared decision making, in which the decision is co-constructed by individual agents with their own social and behavioral contexts, requires an approach that addresses its complexity and incorporates patient agency and sociocultural influences.
